Master of Arts in Theology Program

CDU offers an accredited Master of Arts in Theology (MA). This program is administered through distance learning with no residency requirement.

Additional Degree Requirements

  • the Philosophy for Theology Online Course (212-1202): required; may be taken for one (1) academic credit;
  • the Program Completion Strategies  Seminar (206-1701): required, though credit does not count toward the degree;
  • two written proctored comprehensive examinations (one at end of each of five required courses);
  • a major capstone term paper/project of 20-30 pages (to be submitted after course work is completed.)

The Master of Arts Degree in Theology has been approved by the Virginia Council of Higher Education.

* Those without Internet access need to make special arrangements through the Graduate Registrar.


Admission Requirements

Adults of any faith who have a baccalaureate degree are welcome to take graduate courses at CDU. However, to be accepted into the Master's Degree Program, the following admissions procedures must be submitted:

  • Proof of a bachelor's degree in any academic discipline from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education
  • completion or waiver of the master's prerequisite course
  • a completed Master's Degree Program Application
  • an official transcript from the previous college(s) attended
  • a non-refundable application fee of $100

The student will be notified in writing of his or her acceptance into a degree program.


Earn a Catechetical Diploma

Graduates students working toward a MA degree may also earn the Catechetical Diploma. The Catechetical Diploma is an ecclesiastical teaching certificate awarded by the authority of the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy (the Congregation responsible for Catechetics.)

Program Objectives

To obtain a Catechetical Diploma, graduate students must meet all the requirements and take all the courses required for the MA in Theology degree. In addition, students need to:

  • Take Survey of the Catholic Spirituality (201-0701) and General Catechetics: Methods and Materials (211-0901). These courses may also count as two of the electives required for the MA degree.

  • After completing all coursework, submit a catechetical project
