Lawrence J. King received a BS in Mathematics from St. Mary's College of California. He then attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received an MS in Mathematics and taught calculus courses. He then worked at Microsoft as a technical writer for over half a decade. During this time, he volunteered in the adult education program at his local parish, leading small-group discussions and giving lectures on a variety of topics. Eventually he decided to pursue theological studies full-time.

Professor King received an MA in Theology from the Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology, one of the schools within the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He is currently working towards a doctorate in Systematic Theology at Catholic University of America. His primary focuses are the theology of the magisterium, ecclesiology, Christology, and Church history.
