Students admitted to The Catholic Distance University's  MA program follow a
core curriculum
(19 credits) and in consultation with a faculty advisor select a concentration area (15 concentration credits and 5 five elective credits) in
Ecclesial Service
, Sacred Scripture, Philosophy/Theology, or Catholic Culture. In addition
to coursework, students will also complete the following:

  • prerequisite course The Basics of Catholicism: Faith, Life & Prayer
  • Graduate Academic Skills (a 1-credit, 30-lesson course that extends over 3 years or the length of the student's program, whichever comes first)
  • A written comprehensive exam on the core courses
  • A written comprehensive exam on the concentration courses
  • Completion of a research paper of approximately thirty pages on a topic in the concentration, to be submitted after all course work is completed. Students enroll in Thesis Direction and consult with their advisor to select a topic and finish within six months..

*This course replaces 216-0101G God, Man, and the Universe

** As of May 2011, Philosophy for Theology (206-1207) replaces the previously offered three one-credit courses Philosophy I, II, and III (206-1203, 206-1204, 206-1205). Students who took Philosophy I, II and III are not required to take 206-1207.

All students are strongly encouraged to include six (6) credits of scripture in their program, either as part of the concentration or among their electives.
