Those who complete the BA in Theology completion degree program at Catholic Distance University will be able to:

  • Qualify for positions that require an undergraduate degree in theology. This is the highest level measureable objective. It relates student to the theological world at large and recognizes that the student equipped with the B.A. from CDU can indeed synthesize and critically approach Catholicism at a level that enables him/her to work in a coherent and rigorous way.  Achievement of this level is demonstrated by the passing of all of the courses for the degree with grades of at least 80%, in the required time period.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic terms and relationships in theology as they relate to knowledge, comprehension and application of Catholicism. These are measured through quizzes and in online discussion in class. The student will possess sufficient written and oral skills to explain the meaning of the history and theology of Sacred Scripture, an analysis, comprehension, and application of the theological principles in Church documents, and an analysis and evaluation of theological texts, and then discuss them with the appropriate vocabulary and concepts. In each course, these various skill levels are measured both in the online discussion throughout each week as well as in written papers.  Each week of the course has a list of lesson objectives that are to be achieved in that week. These are tested through weekly online quizzes, participation in online discussion in class with the professor, and written work that is submitted for grading.

  • Demonstrate competency as a teacher of the basic concepts of theology, showing that they know the concepts, understand them, and can analyze them and apply them in a synthetic way that grasps the integrity of Catholicism and its world-view. The individual has to explain concepts and discuss them in the online discussion room. This is in additional to the competency derived from the various written exercises.

  • Give evidence of preparation in the higher level functions of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of concepts, in terms of understanding the concepts and their applications, that are the necessary foundations for a graduate program in theology.
  • Articulate the propositions of the faith in a precise way to show how they fit into the larger Catholic whole. Students completing the degree will also be familiar―in other words will have done the analysis and synthesis involved in understanding and evaluating― magisterial documents, especially from Vatican II, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the writings of recent popes, and also non-magisterial texts from notable theologians in the tradition of the Church.

  • Demonstrate sufficient personal development that reflects a growing spiritual maturity (coming to own the Catholic synthesis) and religious literacy (being able to handle texts and pass courses at the required grade level).
